I don’t have many ingredient’s good for making smoothie’s. I have strawberries, frozen pineapples, milk, and low-fat, plain yogurt. Any good recipe’s for creamy and thick smoothies?
Today I made a smoothie with some yogurt, milk, strawberries, and some frozen pineapple. It was good, but I was wondering, how many part’s milk/juice, and how many parts yogurt and fruit should a smoothie be to be nice and creamy?

I want to get in the habit of making my own fruit juice smoothie at home but I don’t have a juicer nor do I know anything about purchasing one.   Is there any way to make a fruit juice smoothie without a juicer?

The answer to this one is simple.  No.

You can use a juicer to make juice, especially specialty juices.  Think things like carrot juice, beet juice, cabbage juice, etc.  Juicers do a great job of extracting the juice from what might otherwise be considered “non-juicy” vegetables.

But if you are looking to make a Fruit Juice Smoothie, all you need is:

  • Fruit juice — you can use canned, frozen, or fresh squeezed
  • A base — normally ice cream, yogurt, frozen bananas, or frozen yogurt
  • Ice cubes — alternatively, you could freeze the fruit juice into cubes

Blend the ingredients in a blender, and you should be good to go!

Fruit Juice in a Smoothie Instead of Yogurt

fruit juice in a smoothieI have found many smoothie recipes that sound really good, but all of them include yogurt (or sorbet or soy milk, etc) and I’d rather use just fruit and fruit juice in a smoothie (and ice if needed). I will use Splenda to sweeten if needed. So yeah I just need to know how much fruit/juice to add to a smoothie recipe that has, say, one cup of yogurt/sorbet/soymilk. Like a ratio or something. I can do math to adjust the amount once I have that established.

Using Fruit Juice in a Smoothie

Replacing yogurt with fruit juice in a smoothie isn’t a bad thing.  The biggest difference you’ll notice is that the smoothie will be more watery.  Sure… you can freeze the fruit juice or use ice cubes to help thicken the smoothie, but it won’t be as effective as using a base of yogurt.  What you can use to replace the thickening effect of yogurt is either a meal replacement powder (I like MetRx Vanilla), or even a sugar-free pudding mix.

You can always experiment with other things, such as thicker fruits (banana, muskmelon, papaya) or other bases.  And you’ll want to experiment with the mix ratio, so I don’t have a good answer to that.  But, to answer your question, “Yes, you can drop the yogurt and use fruit juice in a smoothie!”
