Apple Smoothie from Puree

Easy Peasy Apple Smoothie

This is an apple smoothie made simple by using a bottled 100% crushed fruit apple smoothie puree.  Dr. Smoothie is the leader of home smoothie purees.  Just place the puree, some water, and ice cubes into a blender and blend until smooth.

Apple Smoothie or Apple Slushie?

There’s a purist in me that says an apple smoothie should have both fruit and a milky base in it.  The drink that is blended in this video is really more of a Slushie than a Smoothie.  That’s easy to fix with the substitution of yogurt for the water.  This may give this apple smoothie a smoother texture and a slightly different taste.  What do you think?

Nutrition is Key in This Apple Smoothie

The puree used in this apple smoothie is packed full of nutrients.  A 16-ounce smoothie contains the equivalent of three servings of fruit.  The smoothie has a taste that isn’t like green apples.  Even with no added sugar, the puree gives this a unique taste that isn’t sour.  For an apple smoothie that is 100% fat free, natural, and lactose free, select Dr. Smoothie.  Enriched with minerals and vitamins, but so good your kids will love it.

Fruit Juice in a Smoothie Instead of Yogurt

fruit juice in a smoothieI have found many smoothie recipes that sound really good, but all of them include yogurt (or sorbet or soy milk, etc) and I’d rather use just fruit and fruit juice in a smoothie (and ice if needed). I will use Splenda to sweeten if needed. So yeah I just need to know how much fruit/juice to add to a smoothie recipe that has, say, one cup of yogurt/sorbet/soymilk. Like a ratio or something. I can do math to adjust the amount once I have that established.

Using Fruit Juice in a Smoothie

Replacing yogurt with fruit juice in a smoothie isn’t a bad thing.  The biggest difference you’ll notice is that the smoothie will be more watery.  Sure… you can freeze the fruit juice or use ice cubes to help thicken the smoothie, but it won’t be as effective as using a base of yogurt.  What you can use to replace the thickening effect of yogurt is either a meal replacement powder (I like MetRx Vanilla), or even a sugar-free pudding mix.

You can always experiment with other things, such as thicker fruits (banana, muskmelon, papaya) or other bases.  And you’ll want to experiment with the mix ratio, so I don’t have a good answer to that.  But, to answer your question, “Yes, you can drop the yogurt and use fruit juice in a smoothie!”

1 cup yogurt

Facts to Help Spice Up Your Vanilla Smoothie

Vanilla Beans

Vanilla is really delicious. Whenever I have my choice of flavors in ice cream or cake, I choose vanilla. It is my favorite flavor. Yummy!

Everyone knows that vanilla tastes great, but do you also know that vanilla flavoring comes from orchids? Although it is native to Mexico, it can grow throughout the tropics. It grows on a vine and climbs up a tree, pole or other support. It is often found growing in the woods but is also grown on plantations.

Vanilla Extract

Do you know that vanilla is the second most expensive spice after saffron? It may surprise you, but some shops sell vanilla beans for $2 to $3 each. That may sound expensive, but the beans are of very high quality. Remember, pure vanilla extract has no sugar added and the delicious vanilla smell will last forever. If someone offers you vanilla extract at a cheaper price, you should think twice. The less expensive extracts can be adulterated and not as high of quality. Be careful that you get what you really want!

Types of Vanilla Extract

Organic Vanilla Extract

If you love vanilla as much as I do, you may curious about the different types of vanilla extract. Bourbon vanilla or Bourbon-Madagascar vanilla is a particular type of vanilla plant cultivated on Madagascar and Reunion Island, also known as the “Bourbon” Islands. Bourbon vanilla beans are most commonly used for the vanilla extract you find at the supermarket. Mexican vanilla is the king of vanilla extracts. Tahitian vanilla is a more rare type of vanilla, but its known for its fruity aroma. West Indian Vanilla is a vine forb/herb.

Growing Vanilla

The best vanilla is grown under the best conditions. It will grow better in a hot, humid climate. For healthy vines, moderate rainfall is best.

Health Benefits of Vanilla

Another surprising thing about vanilla is that it is a healthy choice. It can help to reduce fevers. Vanilla also increases the levels of catecholamines, including adrenaline. It has been shown to be able to block quorum sensing in bacteria, so it aids the immune system. It has also been described as an aphrodisiac.

Vanilla can also be used as a sweet treat when you’re trying to lose weight. Diet pills may seem like a quick way to lose those extra pounds, but exercising and eating better is the healthier way to shed extra weight.

If you are craving something sweet to drink, instead of drinking high calorie sodas or soft drinks, try a vanilla smoothie without ice cream.

Knowing its benefits, there’s no reason to feel guilty about indulging in healthy vanilla treats. A delicious and healthy choice is a Vanilla Smoothie without ice cream!

Fruit Juice Smoothie Require a Juicer?

fruit juice smoothieDo You Need a Juicer to Make a Fruit Juice Smoothie?

I want to get in the habit of making my own fruit juice smoothie at home but I don’t have a juicer nor do I know anything about purchasing one.   Is there any way to make a fruit juice smoothie without a juicer?

A Fruit Juice Smoothie Doesn’t Need a Juicer

The answer to this one is simple.  No.

You can use a juicer to make juice, especially specialty juices.  Think things like carrot juice, beet juice, cabbage juice, etc.  Juicers do a great job of extracting the juice from what might otherwise be considered “non-juicy” vegetables.

But if you are looking to make a Fruit Juice Smoothie, all you need is:

  • Fruit juice — you can use canned, frozen, or fresh squeezed
  • A base — normally ice cream, yogurt, frozen bananas, or frozen yogurt
  • Ice cubes — alternatively, you could freeze the fruit juice into cubes

Blend the ingredients in a blender, and you should be good to go!
