I have done a bit of research and have heard about buying pure protein from a bulk supplier and mixing your own shakes. Is that a good idea?

I am 16, weighing at 116lbs. I am somewhat physically active, I play basketball everyday and soon will be planning on starting boxing and workout routines. How would I find the total amount of grams I should take for the protein shake to be working?

Healthy Green Smoothie with a Protein Kick

A recent visit to my doctor ended with a prescription to ‘lose some weight and eat better’. Along with a suggestion to cut out some carbohydrates, the doctor wanted me to add more protein to my diet.

So when I can across this recipe on Yahoo (credited to Lily Kunin of Clean Food Dirty City), I figured it would be a good share for SmoothieRecipe.TV.  She dubbed it the Morning Warrior Smoothie Bowl.

Morning Warrior Smoothie Bowl


  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango (optional)
  • 2 handfuls of greens (kale, spinach, romaine, etc.)
  • 2 tablespoons hemp protein
  • 1 tablespoon soaked flax seeds
  • Small piece of ginger
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Dash turmeric


  1. Pour coconut water and lemon juice to a blender
  2. With blender on high, add all remaining ingredients.
  3. Drink as-is, or pour in a bowl and top with blueberries or other fresh fruit.

Should I Drink Protein Shakes While Trying to Lose Weight?

trying to lose weightI’m trying to lose weight.  I want to try to drink protein shakes while I go to the gym to lose weight.  Which one shall I drink?  I live in the UK.

I knew a girl in the gym who used to drink a protein shake within a half hour after working out at the gym.  It was so she does not lose muscle.  Is that true?

Trying to lose weight isn’t difficult — all you need to do is burn more calories than you take in.  That’s the tough part.

Protein shakes won’t make you lose weight on their own.  Shakes add calories.  They don’t take them away.  So why could it help you?

As I said, trying to lose weight is easy if you burn more calories than you take in.  Muscle burns more calories than fat does.  Protein helps construct muscle, assuming you are exercising well in order to build that muscle.

If you are eating fats and extra carbohydrates and sugars, substituting protein shake calories for some of those ‘bad calories’ will likely help you build muscle (with exercise), and will also aid in weight loss.

So if you are exercising intensely, reducing bad food intake, and adding protein shakes can actually give you better results when you are trying to lose weight.
