Good Protein Shake Recommendations

There are several sources of protein that feed muscle growth.  None of them, with exercise and taken in suggested quantities, should result in fat gain.  These proteins come from different route food sources, and each reacts with the body in a different way.

Good Protein ShakeCasein and Whey Proteins both come from cows.  Whey makes a good protein shake for right after a workout, since it is quickly and easily absorbed by muscle.  Casein makes a good protein shake for between meals and before going to sleep, as it is absorbed slowly and steadily over a long period of time.  You can take either protein alone, or in a combination shake.

Egg White Protein comes from eggs (duh!) and it is another high-quality protein.  You may see this described as albumin or “instantized egg albumin” on a package label.  This is a much better choice than the old raw eggs shakes of the past, due to egg-born illnesses.

Soy is another type of protein that you can commonly buy.  It isn’t a bad protein itself.  The downside of it is that soy may raise estrogen levels in males and may negatively impact thyroid function in high quantities.  While there is no need to avoid soy in general, you would want to avoid protein shake powders where soy is listed as the first or second ingredient on the label.

Here are several good protein shake mixes that I’d recommend.

Healthy Green Smoothie with a Protein Kick

A recent visit to my doctor ended with a prescription to ‘lose some weight and eat better’. Along with a suggestion to cut out some carbohydrates, the doctor wanted me to add more protein to my diet.

So when I can across this recipe on Yahoo (credited to Lily Kunin of Clean Food Dirty City), I figured it would be a good share for SmoothieRecipe.TV.  She dubbed it the Morning Warrior Smoothie Bowl.

Morning Warrior Smoothie Bowl

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen mango (optional)
  • 2 handfuls of greens (kale, spinach, romaine, etc.)
  • 2 tablespoons hemp protein
  • 1 tablespoon soaked flax seeds
  • Small piece of ginger
  • Juice of 1/2 lemon
  • Dash turmeric

Preparation:

  1. Pour coconut water and lemon juice to a blender
  2. With blender on high, add all remaining ingredients.
  3. Drink as-is, or pour in a bowl and top with blueberries or other fresh fruit.

We try to make smoothies with protein powder, fruit, milk, and ice, and it always seems too frothy at the top. I’ve tried to look it up finding only a few solutions. I’ve heard that less liquid prevents froth, but I’m not sure if it’s true.
