Oatmeal Protein Shake: Beneficial or Bunk?

Oatmeal Protein ShakeOatmeal Protein Shake

So, I am getting into protein shakes after I workout now. But a friend told me he puts his regular ingredients in, and a half cup of oatmeal. What does oatmeal do in an oatmeal protein shake?

He said it makes you bigger? Is is just a healthy choice or does it like, fuel protein or something crazy I wouldn’t know about.

Thanks in advance for any information you can give me on the possible benefits of an Oatmeal Protein Shake over a regular protein shake.

  1. Adds some slow-digesting carbs to keep your blood sugar level under control. Also good for reucing LDL cholesterol.

  2. Mainly just fiber — it won’t have any effect on your supplement.

  3. He probably claims it makes you bigger for a few reasons. First, you need to take in more calories than you burn in order to gain muscle (but not too many calories at once, or you will gain more fat than you want), so oatmeal will increase the calories (a half cup is about 150 calories). Second, the carbs in oatmeal are fairly low GI, so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar levels to transport protein into your muscles, but it probably does aid in getting those nutrients to your muscles. Also, after a workout, it is good to have not only protein, but carbs too, in order to restore glycogen stores for energy.

  4. LOL… I mix natural chemical free whey with whole oats every morning and toss some blueberries in there. Oats are a great source of slow digesting carbs and is a great mix with whey protein. As far as making you bigger, proper nutrition and heavy weight training stimulate growth in the body. It is a healthy choice but you have to put in the work to be successful. Hope this helped you out.
