Is a Smoothie Diet Right for You?

A Smoothie Diet isn’t for everyone. In fact, I’ll argue that it isn’t really good for anyone. But I’m mainly talking about the steady stream of young kids who want to lose weight by only drinking smoothies and running five miles a day. I see a steady stream of these young people — mainly girls — hoping to live off smoothies for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Smoothies are healthy in moderation. But like any other food, they are best taken in concert with other nutritional foods. Many fruits contain acids. These aren’t harmful once in a while, but a steady smoothie diet, just like a steady orange diet, isn’t good for you.

The food is healthy. The steady diet of that food isn’t.

Is There a Good Smoothie Diet?

While I think most diets that count 100% on smoothies are more harm than help, there are a couple of things you can do to improve the nutritional value of smoothies if you are going to follow a smoothie diet.

The first is to make your smoothies more balanced. You do this by adding vegetables, proteins and healthy oils to the smoothies you make. This can be accomplished by adding spinach, protein powder, and avocado to a smoothie.

You can also make healthier smoothies by following a more whole foods or raw foods approach.

Smoothie Diets on the Market

One of the better known Smoothie Diets is the RightSize Smoothies Diet.  It isn’t so much a diet as a low-calorie smoothie that you can use when planning a diet.

Another popular Smoothie Diet is the Slim Fast 3-2-1 Diet Plan.  This diet plan is a mix of healthy snacks, low-calorie smoothies and a healthy whole food meal.

Green Smoothie Revolution: The Radical Leap Towards Natural Health goes a long ways toward making smoothies healthier. One weak spot, in my opinion, is the need for protein. This deficiency is pointed out by many of the folks who have read the book.

But with few exceptions, this book is heartily recommended by those who have read it. That speaks volumes for the quality of the information in the book.

There are over 200 recipes in the book for smoothies that fit this diet style. The author covers topics well, including smoothies for pets, kids, and many other groups.

If you are looking to start your smoothie diet right away, I’d have to recommend Paleo Diet Smoothies. The Paleo Diet is based on the foods and eating style of our ancestors.
